Learn all you need about expertise and gypsum here!
"Boost expertise" was not a kind of query you'd search in Google a week ago. Now it's one of the hottest discussion topics in the NW community. What does it even mean? How should you "boost" your "expertise" and why? Let's take a closer look at the latest addition to Amazon's New World!

1. What's expertise?
Remember "high water mark"? Yeah, that name sucked. Now it has been rebranded to "expertise" which sounds much better. Luckily, its definition hasn't changed: you still need to improve this stat to get a higher chance of better loot.
Here's an example: suppose you have a 550 gs helmet. Right now the highest gear score of the helmet you can loot is 570. If you increase your expertise, you'll get a higher chance of finding a 572 gs item for the same slot. And if you increase it a little more, you'll be able to loot a 574 gs one – and so on. So what expertise does is give you a higher chance to get a better item for a particular slot.
Unlike high water mark, you are not supposed to endlessly farm items to increase your chances of getting better ones. You can of course, but there's a better way to do that now. You can gather special new resources to improve it. Very New-World-ish, isn't? Farming resources is what this game about!
Expertise is not shared among all your equipment. Each slot has its own figure. So even if your helmet expertise is through the roof, your glove one, for example, might lag behind considerably. Hence, you should improve your gear's expertise evenly if you want a well-rounded character.
Now let's get back to the resources that can help you improve this valuable stat.

2. What do I need to improve expertise?
One word – gypsum! Lots of beautiful whitish powder. Well, in fact, it can be of several colors. But let's not get ahead of ourselves – we'll learn more about this resource one step at a time.
First of all, how does it all work? Expertise can be improved with special casts that you craft at the so-called gypsum kiln. You can find those kilns in any town – they look like some sort of a forge. The casts that you create there can be made for all types of slots. Each cast costs 1 gypsum orb. There are several ways to make a gypsum orb and that's where numerous flavours of gypsum come in.
Before discussing them let's put the general scheme into a picture:

3. What types of gypsum are there?
There are 8 types of gypsum. 7 of them are always available and one is available only during seasonal events. What makes those types different is the source of their obtainment and their crafting properties. Let's look closer at these two points.
Source of their obtainment. This one is pretty straightforward. You get some types of gypsum from open-world bosses, some other types – from expeditions, and so on. Just choose those that can be found in your favourite activities and you should be good.
Crafting properties. This one is slightly less straightorward. All these gypsum types are used to create gypsum orbs. There's only one type of orb. But there are 8 ways to craft it – just as many as there are types of gypsum. The main difference is quantity. For example, you need 3 gypsum pieces of one kind to craft an orb, while another kind requires 10 pieces to assemble an orb with it. It doesn't mean that some types are better than others. In fact, the ones that require fewer pieces are simply harder to get.
Now let's name all the types of gypsum:
1. OBSIDIAN GYPSUM
Source: open world bosses (mainly in Elite Landmark).
How many make an orb: 3.
2. SAPPHRIE GYPSUM

How many make an orb: 10.
8. DIAMOND GYPSUM

So once again, how does it all work? Let's go through it one more time:
- To get a higher chance of finding better gear you need to improve expertise for your gear slots.
- To do that you need to craft special casts at gypsum kilns.
- Casts require gypsum orbs.
- Gypsum orbs are made of different types of gypsum.
- Gypsum can be found in 8 different ways (see above).
And that's about it! Now you know everything you need to know about expertise and using gypsum to improve it!
